Since 2013, GCO has been supporting the Aseema Charity in India, specifically the Special Education Programme at Pali Chimbai Municipal School (PCMS) and the Kherwadi Municipal School (KMS) with a structured programme to develop and strengthen reading and writing competencies.
In 2015 and 2016, a total of 265 children, 125 from the Pali Chimbai Municipal School and 140 from the Kherwadi Municipal School worked under the aegis of six teachers.
In this program, children in grades 6, 7 and 8, in groups of 3-5, participate in two weekly sessions of one hour (in addition to their regular academic schedule). During these sessions, topics such as Reading, Writing, Spoken English and Extended Reading are covered. The results of the Special Education Programme Modules are astounding: 47% have jumped 1-grade level in proficiency, 10% have jumped 2-grade levels while 3% have jumped 3-grade level in proficiency. In addition, the confidence, selfcontrol and articulation levels of the children have increased. Furthermore, the children were highly successful at the board
examinations, with an average score between 95-100%.
Looking towards the upcoming academic year, Aseema aims to expand the program both by providing support sessions to more students and also by expanding the modules to children in grades 1-4.
GCO is very proud of the students and their pursuit of excellence in education.
